Surface Preparation & Application
Preparation decides everything on metal. Primer applied over rust seals the corrosion in and allows it to continue working underneath — the coating will fail, and no quality of primer changes that outcome.
Remove all rust, mill scale, and loose material back to sound, bright metal using wire brushing, scraping, or mechanical abrasion. On heavily corroded steel, mechanical preparation is essential; chemical rust converters are a compromise, not an equivalent.
Degrease thoroughly. Fabricated steel carries oil and cutting residue, and handled metal picks up grease. Primer will not bond through either — wipe down with an appropriate solvent and allow to dry completely.
Prime as soon as possible after preparation. Freshly cleaned steel begins oxidising within hours in Karachi’s humidity, and leaving prepared metal overnight undoes much of the work.
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush or spray, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack. Work primer well into welds, joints, corners, and edges — corrosion starts at these points, and brush application reaches them better than spray.
