Surface Preparation & Application
Enamel shows the surface beneath it, and a general-purpose product has no extra film build to hide poor preparation.
On metal: remove all rust, scale, and loose material back to sound bright metal, then degrease thoroughly. Apply a rust-inhibiting primer before the enamel — ICI Dulux Red Oxide Metal Primer is the standard choice. In Karachi’s coastal humidity, enamel over unprimed steel fails from corrosion beneath within a year.
On wood: sand along the grain and remove all dust. Fill nail holes and defects with wood filler, allow to dry, and sand flush. Prime bare timber before applying the enamel.
On masonry: ensure the surface is fully cured, clean, and dry. Fill and level as needed, and prime porous surfaces before coating.
On previously painted surfaces: remove loose and flaking material, then sand existing gloss to provide a key.
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush or spray, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack. Work in thin, even coats — thick application runs and sags on vertical surfaces and slows curing. Two coats give the best depth and durability. Allow full drying between coats. Clean equipment with the recommended thinner immediately after use.
