Surface Preparation & Application
The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, loose material, and flaking paint. New plaster must cure fully before painting. Fill cracks and uneven areas with a suitable wall putty and sand smooth. A suitable interior primer helps control absorption so the colour looks even across the wall. Berger’s thinning guidance is to add 3 to 4 litres of water to one gallon of paint before use. For the final coat, Berger says some extra water may be added to improve flow. Check the pack for the thinning instructions that apply to the size you buy. Follow the coat count and recoat times printed on the pack, and clean your brushes and equipment with water soon after use.
Common Mistakes With Matt Emulsion
The most common mistake is rushing the preparation. Matt hides less than people expect, and patches of filler that were not sanded smooth can still show through under side light.
Thinning by eye is another one. Too little water makes the paint drag and leave roller marks, while too much weakens the coat. Measure the water, and use the extra water for the final coat only, as Berger advises. Painting before the previous coat has dried can leave patchy colour, and stopping halfway across a wall leaves a visible join, so work wall by wall and keep a wet edge.
Care and Cleaning
Let the paint cure fully before cleaning it. Berger describes the finish as easily washable, but wipe gently all the same. Use a soft damp cloth or sponge, avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, and deal with marks early before they dry in. Rubbing hard on any matt surface can leave a shiny patch. Keep a little leftover paint, labelled with colour and date, for touch-ups.
