Surface Preparation & Application
Berger states the surface should normally be dry and free from grease, dust, and dirt. On previously painted walls, remove all adherent paint by scraping, then scrub or sandpaper the surface.
Although Berger says new surfaces do not normally need a primer, it recommends a coat of Berger Plastron where there is a possibility of efflorescence, saltpetre, or lime bloom. It also recommends a coat of Plastron for powdery and chalky surfaces. Our team can advise whether your wall needs it.
Follow the application method, thinning instructions, coat count, and recoat times printed on the pack. Check the weather before you start, since rain or high humidity during application can affect the finish.
Common Mistakes With Exterior Emulsions
The most common mistake is painting over a chalky, flaking, or salt-affected wall without treating it first. Berger’s own guidance on Plastron exists for this reason, and skipping it can leave the new coat peeling or patchy.
Painting a damp wall is another. Check for seepage before you paint, and treat the cause first. Starting a coat and stopping halfway across a wall leaves a visible join, so work in sections from corner to corner and keep a wet edge. Exterior work also depends on weather, so avoid painting just before rain.
Care and Cleaning
Let the paint cure fully before cleaning it. Berger describes the finish as highly washable. Wash gently with a soft cloth or sponge and clean water, avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads, and do not use a high-pressure jet close to a fresh coat. Keep a little leftover paint, labelled with colour and date, for touch-ups.
