Surface Preparation & Application
The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, loose material, and flaking paint. New plaster must cure fully before painting.
Fill cracks and uneven areas with a suitable wall putty and sand smooth. Berger recommends a coat of its interior water-based primer before the emulsion. Priming controls absorption, so the silk finish looks even across the wall.
Stir well before use and thin with clean water as directed on the pack. Berger states the paint is touch dry in about one hour under normal conditions, and further coats can usually be applied after 2 to 3 hours. Follow the coat count on the pack. Clean your brushes and equipment with water straight after use.
Common Mistakes With Silk Finishes
The most common one is painting an unprepared wall. A sheen finish picks up every trowel mark and patch of filler, so a wall that would pass under matt can look uneven under silk. Painting before primer or filler has dried is another cause of patchy colour.
Stopping halfway across a wall and starting again later leaves a visible join, so work wall by wall and keep a wet edge. Scrubbing hard with abrasive pads can also dull a silk surface, so wipe gently.
Care and Cleaning
Let the paint cure fully before you clean it. Berger describes the finish as highly washable. Wipe marks with a soft damp cloth or sponge, avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, and deal with marks early, before they dry in. Keep a little leftover paint, labelled with the colour and date, for touch-ups.
