Wallman Synthetic Undercoat — Undercoat for Wood and Metal in Karachi
Wallman Synthetic Undercoat is a quality synthetic undercoat from Wallman Paints, a Pakistani manufacturer based in Karachi since 1983. Available at Saify Paint House, your authorized Wallman Paints dealer in Karachi, it provides excellent adhesion and a smooth base for enamel topcoats on wood and metal.
Suitable for versatile application by brush, roller, or spray, it is the intermediate stage in a proper enamel system — the step that separates a professional finish from an ordinary one.
What an Undercoat Actually Does
Undercoat is the most frequently skipped stage in enamel work, and the one that most often explains why a finish looks merely acceptable rather than properly done.
Primer bonds to the bare surface. Enamel topcoat provides colour, gloss, and protection. Undercoat does something different from either: it builds film, adds opacity, and creates a uniform surface for the topcoat to sit on.
Opacity matters more than most people expect. Enamel topcoats are formulated for gloss and durability rather than hiding power, so applying them directly over primer often means two or three coats just to bury the primer colour — particularly when going light over red oxide, or changing colour on existing woodwork. An undercoat in a shade close to the topcoat solves this in one step, and undercoat costs less than enamel.
Surface uniformity is the other function. Undercoat sands better than either primer or enamel, so it can be levelled to a genuinely smooth base before the finish coat goes on. On panelled doors and quality joinery, that sanding stage is what produces a surface that reads as sprayed rather than brushed.
It also drives adhesion between layers. The undercoat bonds to the primer or bare timber below and gives the enamel above a consistent surface to grip, tying the system together into one integrated film rather than separate layers that can delaminate.

Recommended Applications
Wallman Synthetic Undercoat is used as the intermediate stage in enamel systems:
- Doors, door frames, and architraves before enamel
- Window frames and interior woodwork
- Furniture and built-in joinery
- Primed metal gates, grills, and railings before topcoating
- Colour changes on existing painted woodwork
- Any surface where a quality enamel finish is wanted
Suitable for properly prepared wood and primed metal surfaces.
Surface Preparation & Application
On wood: sand along the grain and remove all dust. Fill nail holes and defects with wood filler, allow to dry, and sand flush. Bare timber should be primed before undercoating — the undercoat builds on the primer rather than replacing it.
On metal: the surface must already be primed. Apply Wallman Red Oxide Primer to cleaned bare metal first, and allow it to dry fully before undercoating.
On previously painted surfaces: remove loose and flaking material, then sand existing gloss to provide a key.
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush, roller, or spray, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack. One coat is normally sufficient; a second helps when covering a strong existing colour or red oxide beneath a pale topcoat.
Once fully dry, sand lightly with fine abrasive paper and remove all dust. This step is where finish quality is actually decided — the topcoat replicates whatever surface it is applied over. Then apply the enamel topcoat. Allow full drying between coats. Clean equipment with the recommended thinner immediately after use.
Completing the Enamel System
A proper enamel finish on wood or metal is three stages, and each does a distinct job.
Prime first — Wallman Red Oxide Primer on metal. Undercoat second, sanded smooth. Then finish with Wallman Super Gloss Enamel for a high-gloss surface, or Wallman Matt Enamel for a contemporary matt finish.
Our team at either DHA store can specify the full system for your surfaces and estimate quantities across all three stages.
