Surface Preparation & Application
The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, loose material, and flaking paint. New plaster must cure fully before painting. Fill cracks and uneven areas with a suitable wall putty and sand smooth. Our team can recommend a primer for your surface.
Berger advises thinning SPD with an equal volume of water or slightly more. The final coat should be thinned more than the first for a smoother finish. Porous walls usually take more paint on the first coat, so mix the first coat with this in mind. Follow the application method, coat count, and recoat times printed on the pack. Clean your tools with water straight after use.
Common Mistakes With Semi Plastic Emulsion
The most common mistake is thinning without a plan. Too little water makes the paint hard to spread, and too much weakens the coat, so measure the water rather than guessing. Using the same thinning ratio on every coat is another one, since Berger advises thinning the final coat more.
Painting over damp walls, fresh plaster, or unsanded patches also leaves marks that show through the finished coat. Stopping halfway across a wall and restarting later leaves a visible join, so work wall by wall and keep a wet edge.
Care and Cleaning
Berger’s product page does not describe SPD as a washable finish, so treat the wall gently. Dust it with a dry soft cloth, and spot-clean lightly only after the paint has fully cured.
