Surface Preparation & Application
Berger’s guidance is to rub new surfaces down with stone or sandpaper to remove nibs on the plaster, and to sand previously painted surfaces thoroughly. All surfaces should then be cleaned with a bristle brush or broom. Make sure the surface is dry and free of flaking paint, oil, and grease. Fill cracks and uneven areas with a suitable wall putty and sand smooth before you paint.
For thinning, Berger advises mixing an equal volume of NU Emulsion and water. Porous surfaces may need additional water on the first coat to satisfy the porosity of the wall. Berger states the paint dries out in half an hour and can be recoated in 1 hour. Clean your brushes and equipment with soap and water immediately after use.
Common Mistakes With Distemper
The most common mistake is painting over a dusty or flaking surface. Distemper sits on top of whatever is under it, so loose paint and dust show up as peeling or patchy colour. Skipping the sanding step leaves nibs and ridges visible under side light.
Thinning without measuring is another. Mix by volume as Berger advises rather than by eye. Recoating before the first coat has dried leaves uneven colour, and stopping halfway across a wall leaves a visible join, so work wall by wall and keep a wet edge.
Care and Cleaning
Berger’s product page does not describe NU Emulsion as washable, so treat the wall gently. Dust it with a dry soft cloth, avoid scrubbing, and spot-clean lightly only after the paint has fully cured. For rooms where you expect to wipe the walls often, such as children’s rooms or busy hallways, ask us about a silk emulsion instead.
