Surface Preparation & Application
Clear lacquer hides nothing. Every scratch, sanding mark, and patch of uneven colour in the timber shows through the finished film — so preparation on lacquer work is more demanding than on painted joinery, not less.
Sand along the grain, working progressively through finer grades of abrasive paper. Cross-grain scratches are invisible on bare timber and glaringly obvious once lacquer goes on. Remove all dust thoroughly.
Fill defects with a wood filler matched to the timber colour — filler that reads a different shade will show clearly under a clear finish.
Apply a suitable sanding sealer to bare timber first. This seals the grain, prevents uneven absorption, and gives a base that sands smooth before the lacquer coats.
Ensure adequate ventilation during application. Stir gently rather than vigorously — vigorous stirring introduces air bubbles that show in a gloss film. Apply by brush or spray, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack.
Work in thin, even coats, sanding lightly between coats with fine abrasive and removing all dust. Dust control matters more here than with any other finish: every particle that settles on wet gloss lacquer is permanently visible. Allow full drying between coats. Clean equipment with the recommended thinner immediately after use.
