Surface Preparation & Application
The ceiling must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, cobwebs, loose material, and flaking paint. New plaster must cure fully before painting. Water stains and mould need dealing with first, and the source of any leak must be fixed, or the marks will come back through the new paint.
Fill cracks and holes with putty, sand smooth, and wipe off all the dust. Ekotint recommends its Wall Putty to smooth surfaces and its Ekotint Primer Emulsion to improve adhesion and colour depth before the final coat. Ask our team about a stain-blocking primer if you are painting over old water marks.
Stir well before use. Cut in around the edges first with a brush, then roll the ceiling in one session, keeping a wet edge, so lap marks do not dry in. Work away from the window and finish with light, even strokes in one direction. Follow the thinning, coat count, and drying guidance printed on the pack, and let the first coat dry fully before the second.
Common Ceiling Painting Mistakes
The most common mistake is painting over a stain without fixing the leak behind it, so the mark returns. Skipping the sanding after puttying is another, because every ridge catches the light. Stopping halfway across the ceiling and starting again later leaves a visible join. And an overloaded roller drips and splatters, so load it lightly and work in thin coats.
