Surface Preparation & Application
Berger’s guidance is to apply the undercoat to clean, dry wood. Remove dust, grease, and loose material before you start. For previously painted wood, remove loose or flaking paint by scraping, then sand the surface smooth.
Berger says the undercoat is ready for brush application. If you need to thin it, use mineral or genuine turpentine only, as Berger’s guidance states. Follow the coat count and drying instructions on the pack.
Berger’s Pakistan pages do not give a drying time for this product. Check the pack before you apply the topcoat.
Common Mistakes With Undercoat
The most common mistake is applying the undercoat over damp or greasy wood. Solvent-based coatings do not bond well to moisture or grease, so clean and dry the surface first.
Thinning with water is another. Berger’s guidance names mineral or genuine turpentine for thinning, so do not use water. Recoating the topcoat before the undercoat is fully dry can leave soft or patchy colour.
Solvent-based undercoats are flammable. Keep the tin and any turpentine away from heat and naked flames, and work in a well-ventilated space. Keep the lid closed when not in use.
Care, Storage & Safety
Berger’s safety note says to protect the container from extreme hot or cold temperatures. Close it properly after use and keep it upright. Keep it out of reach of children, avoid contact with skin and eyes, and rinse with clean water if contact occurs.
