Surface Preparation & Application
Berger says the surface must be completely dry and free from grease, dirt, and dust before you apply the putty. Use sandpaper or scrapers to prepare it, as Berger advises.
On previously painted walls, Berger recommends scraping off all old paint that is loose or flaking. Then apply a thin coat of Berger Plastron Primer before you put on the putty, for a better finish.
Berger also recommends a thin coat of Berger Plastron Primer under the putty if the finish will be Berger VIP Super Gloss Enamel or Berger All-Rounder Matt Enamel. Follow the pack for the application method and coat count.
Common Mistakes With Wall Putty
The most common mistake is putty over a wall that is not dry. Moisture trapped under the putty can cause it to bubble or lift. Check the wall, and treat any damp before you start.
Skipping the preparation is another. Dust, grease, and loose paint stop the putty from bonding, and the problem carries through to the paint. Scrape and sand first, then brush the surface clean.
Painting too early is a third. Berger gives 16 hours before finishing paint goes on, so keep to that time rather than rushing the next coat.
Care, Storage & Safety
Berger advises keeping the container protected from extreme hot or cold temperatures. Close the lid properly after use, and keep the pack upright. Keep it out of reach of children, avoid contact with eyes and skin, and rinse with clean water if contact occurs.
