What Polyurethane Adds
Standard lacquers cure into a film that is hard enough for furniture in a home. Polyurethane cures into something substantially tougher — a cross-linked film with markedly better abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and impact tolerance.
The difference shows on surfaces that get used rather than looked at. A dining table that takes plates and glasses daily. A reception desk in constant use. Staircase handrails gripped hundreds of times a day. Restaurant furniture wiped down after every service. On these, a standard lacquer wears through at the contact points within a year or two; PU holds.
Chemical resistance is the other practical gain. Cleaning products, spilled drinks, and the general chemistry of daily life attack ordinary lacquer films — softening them, clouding them, eventually breaking them down. PU resists all of it, which is why it is the standard specification for commercial and hospitality joinery.
The trade-offs are real. PU lacquers are less forgiving to apply than standard ones, and repairing a damaged PU finish is harder — the film is tough enough that it resists blending with fresh material, so spot repairs rarely become invisible.
For decorative furniture and light-use joinery, Gloss Lacquer or Matt Lacquer Premium give a better appearance for the money. PU is for surfaces that need to survive.

Surface Preparation & Application
PU lacquer is unforgiving of poor preparation, and harder to correct afterwards than a standard lacquer — so the groundwork matters more here than anywhere else in the Woodcare range.
Sand along the grain, working progressively through finer grades of abrasive paper. Cross-grain scratches are invisible on bare timber and obvious once lacquer goes on. Remove all dust thoroughly.
Fill defects with a wood filler matched to the timber colour. Apply a suitable sanding sealer to bare timber first, sealing the grain and giving a base that sands smooth before lacquering.
Ensure adequate ventilation during application — PU products require it. Follow the mixing instructions on the pack precisely if the product is two-component; the ratio is what determines whether the film cures to full hardness, and approximation produces a soft finish that never fully hardens.
Apply by brush or spray, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack. Work in thin, even coats, sanding lightly between coats and removing all dust. Observe the recoat window stated on the label — PU films cure hard, and recoating outside the window can mean poor adhesion between coats. Allow full curing before putting the surface into use. Clean equipment with the recommended thinner immediately after use.
