Surface Preparation & Application
Clear finishes show the timber completely — every scratch, sanding mark, and area of uneven colour remains visible through the film.
Sand along the grain, working progressively through finer grades of abrasive paper. Cross-grain scratches are invisible on bare timber but obvious once varnish goes on. Remove all dust thoroughly.
Fill defects with a wood filler matched to the timber colour. On previously varnished surfaces, remove all loose and flaking material and sand back to sound timber where the old finish has failed — varnish will not bond reliably over a degraded film.
Weathered exterior timber that has gone grey needs sanding back to fresh wood before coating. The grey layer is degraded cellulose with no structural integrity, and varnish applied over it lifts away with it.
Ensure adequate ventilation during application. Stir gently rather than vigorously — vigorous stirring introduces air bubbles that show in the dried film. Apply by brush, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack.
Work in thin, even coats along the grain, sanding lightly between coats with fine abrasive and removing all dust. Multiple thin coats build better protection than fewer thick ones. Allow full drying between coats. Clean equipment with ICI Dulux Premium Solvent or the recommended thinner immediately after use.
