Gloss lacquer sits visibly on top of the timber. It looks like a finish — deliberately, and often beautifully — but it reads as a coating applied over the wood rather than part of it.
Matt lacquer does the opposite. The surface has almost no reflectivity, so what the eye registers is the timber itself: grain, colour, and texture, with the film essentially invisible. On good wood, that honesty is the appeal. It looks like unfinished timber that happens to be protected.
The practical argument runs alongside the aesthetic one. Matt conceals surface imperfections that gloss magnifies — minor scratches from use, small variations in the substrate, the marks that accumulate on furniture over years. A matt-lacquered table shows wear far less readily than a gloss one.
Application is more forgiving too. Dust particles and minor brush marks that would be permanently visible in a gloss film disappear into a matt surface. On site work where conditions are not perfectly controlled, that tolerance is valuable.

Surface Preparation & Application
Matt lacquer is more forgiving than gloss, but clear finishes still show the timber beneath completely — every scratch, sanding mark, and mismatched filler patch remains visible.
Sand along the grain, working progressively through finer grades of abrasive paper. Cross-grain scratches are invisible on bare timber and obvious once lacquer goes on. Remove all dust thoroughly.
Fill defects with a wood filler matched to the timber colour — filler reading a different shade shows clearly under a clear finish.
Apply a suitable sanding sealer to bare timber first. This seals the grain, prevents uneven absorption, and gives a base that sands smooth before lacquering.
Ensure adequate ventilation during application. Stir thoroughly before use — matting agents settle in the tin, and inadequate stirring produces uneven sheen across the finished surface. This matters more with matt lacquer than with gloss, and it is the most common cause of patchy results.
Apply by brush or spray, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack. Work in thin, even coats, sanding lightly between coats with fine abrasive and removing all dust. Allow full drying between coats. Clean equipment with the recommended thinner immediately after use.
