Why Seal New Plaster Indoors

Surface Preparation & Application
Berger states it is essential that the surface is dry and free from grease and dust before you apply NU Prime Seal. On previously painted surfaces, remove all defective or poorly adhering material by rubbing with a suitable abrasive paper or stiff brush.
Berger’s guidance is to thin the primer 1:1 with water by volume for brush application, depending on the absorbency of the surface. For better results, apply two coats. For spray application, Berger’s product page says to thin with 12 to 15% turpentine, up to 20% for spray, which is a different method. Follow the pack for the method you choose.
Berger says Berger Wall Putty can be applied after the primer if you want a smoother finish. Berger gives a drying time of about one hour, with recoating after two to three hours.
Common Mistakes With Interior Primer
The most common mistake is priming a wall that is still damp or dusty. Berger’s guidance is that the surface must be dry and free from grease and dust, so brush off loose material and wait for the plaster to dry before you start.
Using one coat on a porous wall is another. Berger advises two coats for better results. Thinning by eye is also common, so measure the 1:1 ratio and adjust for how absorbent the wall is. Recoating before the two to three hour interval can disturb the film.
Care, Storage & Safety
Berger advises protecting the container from extreme hot or cold temperatures. After use, close it properly and keep it upright. If the product gets into the eyes, rinse with water and seek medical advice. Keep it out of reach of children, and label any leftover primer with the date.
