Surface Preparation & Application
Berger’s guidance is to make sure all surfaces are free from grease, wax, oil, dirt, and rust before you paint. Loose, blistered, or flaking paint should be removed thoroughly by scraping.

Common Mistakes With Gloss Enamel
The most common mistake is painting over rust or flaking paint without removing it first. Berger specifically asks for loose and flaking paint to be removed, and enamel laid over it can lift later.
Thinning by eye is another. Berger gives a percentage range for brush and spray, so measure the turpentine. Recoating before the 16-hour interval Berger gives can leave the surface soft and uneven. Turpentine is flammable, so keep it away from heat and naked flames, and work in a well-ventilated space.
