Surface Preparation & Application
Preparation decides everything on metal. Primer applied over rust simply seals the corrosion in and allows it to continue working underneath — the coating will fail, and the failure traces back to this step every time.
Remove all rust, mill scale, and loose material back to sound, bright metal using wire brushing, scraping, or mechanical abrasion. On heavily corroded steel, mechanical preparation is essential; chemical rust converters are a compromise, not an equivalent.
Degrease thoroughly. Fabricated steel arrives carrying oil and cutting residue, and handled metal picks up grease. Primer will not bond through either — wipe down with an appropriate solvent and allow to dry completely.
Prime as soon as possible after preparation. Freshly cleaned steel begins oxidising within hours in Karachi’s humidity, and leaving prepared metal overnight undoes much of the work.
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush or spray, thinning with the appropriate thinner as directed on the pack. Work primer well into welds, joints, corners, and edges — corrosion starts at these points, and brush application reaches them better than spray. Two coats give substantially better protection on exterior metalwork. Allow full drying before topcoating. Clean equipment with the recommended thinner immediately after use.
