Why Priming Determines How Long a Paint Job Lasts
Bare plaster and concrete are porous. Emulsion applied over them without priming soaks in unevenly — heavily where the surface is open, barely at all where it is dense. The visible result is patchy colour and inconsistent sheen; the practical result is a wall that swallows the first coat entirely and needs three or four to look acceptable.
Primer closes the surface so it accepts paint uniformly. The first topcoat then covers properly instead of disappearing into the substrate, and the finished wall reads as one consistent surface rather than a map of what lies beneath it.
Moisture protection is the second function, and it matters particularly in Karachi. Surface Preparation & Application
The surface should be clean, dry, and free from all loose material including efflorescence and old flaking paint. New plaster must cure fully before priming — the most common shortcut on Karachi construction sites, and the most frequent cause of coating failure.
Where the wall has been puttied, sand smooth and remove all sanding dust thoroughly. Wipe down rather than brushing; residual dust prevents the primer bonding properly, and preventing it costs nothing.
For walls needing filling as well as priming, apply Nelson Extra Acrylic Filling Putty first, allow to dry completely, and level with emery paper.
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush, roller, or spray, thinning with clean water as directed on the pack. One coat is normally sufficient; highly absorbent surfaces may need a second. Allow to dry fully before topcoating. Clean equipment with water immediately after use.
