What Sealing Actually Achieves
Bare plaster, concrete, and sanded putty are porous surfaces. Paint applied over them without sealing soaks in unevenly — heavily where the surface is open, barely at all where it is dense. The visible result is patchy colour and inconsistent sheen. The practical result is a wall needing three or four coats instead of two.
Sealing closes the surface so it accepts paint uniformly. The first topcoat then covers properly rather than disappearing into the substrate, and the finished wall reads as one consistent surface instead of a map of the plaster underneath.
The economics favour it clearly, and more so on budget projects than premium ones. Primer costs less per litre than emulsion, so using it to control absorption costs less than the extra coats of topcoat needed to compensate. On large-area work the difference compounds quickly.
Adhesion is the third benefit and the one that determines longevity. A sealed, stabilised surface gives the topcoat something consistent to bond to, which affects whether the paint is still sound in five years or already lifting at the edges.
Concrete surfaces deserve mention specifically. Surface Preparation & Application
The surface should be clean, dry, and free from all loose material including efflorescence and old flaking paint. New plaster and concrete must cure fully before sealing — the most common shortcut on Karachi construction sites, and the most frequent cause of coating failure.
On concrete, remove any release agent residue and laitance before sealing. These leave a surface that looks sound but will not hold a coating.
Where the wall has been puttied, sand smooth and remove all sanding dust thoroughly. Wipe down rather than brushing off; residual dust is the usual reason a sealer fails to bond, and it is entirely preventable.
For walls needing filling as well as sealing, apply Nelson Exclusive Putty first, allow to dry completely, and level with emery paper.
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush, roller, or spray, thinning with clean water as directed on the pack. One coat is normally sufficient; highly absorbent surfaces may need a second. Allow to dry fully before topcoating. Clean equipment with water immediately after use.
