Berger Apexior No.3 — Anti-Corrosive Coating for External Boiler Surfaces in Karachi

Berger Apexior No.3 is an industrial anti-corrosive coating from Berger Paints. Available at Saify Paint House, an official Berger Paints stockist in DHA Karachi, it is made for protecting the outside of boilers, condensers, and chimneys. It is not a decorative paint.

Berger describes it as an anti-corrosive coating for external surfaces of boilers, condensers, and chimneys. Berger lists its uses on boiler drums, tubes, water walls, economisers, evaporators, steam accumulators, and calorifiers, in contact with water above 93°C (200°F).

Why an Industrial Anti-Corrosive Coating

Boilers, condensers, and chimneys work in hot, damp, and sometimes corrosive conditions. Bare steel on the outside of this equipment corrodes over time, and a coating that resists that attack helps extend the life of the equipment.

Berger’s page treats the coating as a system. Surface preparation, the number of coats, and the drying and hardening times all matter, so follow each step.

Key Features

  • Anti-corrosive coating — Berger’s description of the product
  • For external surfaces — Berger lists boilers, condensers, and chimneys
  • Use above 93°C — Berger lists contact with water above 93°C (200°F) as the minimum use condition
  • Three coats — Berger’s application guidance for the finishing coat
  • Dries in 3 to 4 hours — Berger’s figure, with overcoating after 24 hours
  • Coverage of 9 to 12 m² per litre — Berger’s figure at 38 microns DFT, depending on surface roughness
  • Available in 5 litres — Berger’s pack size

Recommended Applications

  • External surfaces of boilers and boiler drums
  • Condensers and chimneys
  • Tubes, water walls, and economisers, as Berger lists
  • Steam accumulators, evaporators, and calorifiers, as Berger lists

Surface Preparation & Application

Berger says loose millscale and rust must be removed. Blast cleaning to 2nd Quality BS 4232 is recommended. If blast cleaning is not practical, use mechanical tools and hand wire-brushing to remove loose rust and millscale back to a firm edge. Avoid excessive burnishing of the steel.

Remove oil, grease, and other contaminants with a solvent. Galvanised metal must be degreased thoroughly before coating. The surface must be clean and dry before you start.

Berger says a separate primer is normally not needed. If the surface is blast cleaned, Berger specifies a holding primer. Ask our team which primer applies to your surface before you start. Apply three coats with a brush or roller, allowing 24 hours between coats. Berger says to allow a minimum of 24 hours after the last coat for the system to harden.

Common Mistakes With Boiler Coatings

The most common mistake is coating over millscale or rust that has not been fully removed. Berger’s preparation steps are specific, and coating over loose material means the coat has nothing firm to bond to.

Overcoating too soon is another. Berger says to wait 24 hours between coats, so do not rush the programme.

Berger says adequate ventilation must be provided at all times. Solvent vapour can build up in enclosed areas, so ventilate the work area and follow safe entry procedures for any vessel.

Care, Storage & Safety

This is a solvent-based industrial product. Keep containers away from heat and naked flames, and store them closed and upright, away from children. Wear suitable gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection while applying it. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Work only on cold, shut-down equipment, and follow the safety procedures for the equipment you are working on.

Choosing Between Berger Protective Coatings

Saify Paint House stocks Berger’s protective and industrial coatings. Apexior No.3 is for external surfaces of boilers, condensers, and chimneys. For the internal surfaces of boilers and water-contact equipment, ask about Berger Apexior No.1. For a general anti-corrosive primer on prepared metal, ask about Berger Red Oxide Primer. For metal and masonry in harsh exposure, ask about Berger Chlorinated Rubber Base Paint. Visit our Berger Paints range to compare them.

Planning Your Project

Measure the external surface area and use Berger’s coverage figure of 9 to 12 m² per litre at 38 microns DFT to estimate how much you need. Allow for three coats, plus any holding primer and solvent for cleaning. Berger sells this product in 5 litre packs. Our team can help plan the quantity and the work sequence.
