Berger Apexior No.1 — Anti-Corrosive Boiler Coating in Karachi

Berger Apexior No.1 is an industrial anti-corrosive coating from Berger Paints. Available at Saify Paint House, an official Berger Paints stockist in DHA Karachi, it is made for protecting the inside of boiler and water-contact equipment, not for decorative painting.

Berger describes it as an anti-corrosive coating for internal surfaces of boiler drums, tubes, water walls, economisers, and steam accumulators. Berger says the coating is applied with a brush and then cured by raising the water temperature in the system.

Why an Industrial Anti-Corrosive Coating

Boiler drums and tubes carry hot water and steam, and bare steel corrodes quickly under those conditions. A coating that resists water and forms a stable film protects the metal between maintenance cycles.

Berger’s guidance is that the coating must be cured in service. The film only becomes inert and impermeable after the system has been filled and heated, so the curing step is part of the job, not an extra.

Key Features

  • Anti-corrosive coating — Berger’s description of the product
  • For internal boiler surfaces — Berger lists boiler drums, tubes, water walls, economisers, steam accumulators, and related equipment
  • Use above 93°C — Berger lists contact with hot water above 93°C (200°F) as the minimum use condition
  • No separate primer needed — Berger says one coat can go directly onto clean steel
  • Coverage of 8 to 10 m² per litre — Berger’s figure at 38 microns dry film thickness, depending on surface roughness
  • Available in 5 litres — Berger’s pack size

Recommended Applications

  • Boiler drums and tubes
  • Water walls and economisers
  • Steam accumulators and calorifiers
  • Steam turbine casings and water softeners, as Berger lists
  • Evaporators in contact with hot water above 93°C

Surface Preparation & Application

Berger’s guidance is to remove all loose mill scale and rust. Where possible, grit blast to 2nd Quality BS 4232, with a maximum profile of 0.75 µm. If blast cleaning is not practical, use mechanical tools and hand wire-brushing to remove loose rust and scale back to a firm edge. Avoid excessive burnishing of the steel.

Remove oil, grease, and other contaminants with a solvent. The surface must be clean and dry before coating. No separate primer is needed. Apply one coat with a brush directly to the clean steel, working into all corners, edges, and welded nuts and bolts.

Berger advises waiting 6 to 8 hours at 20°C before the next coat. Apply two further coats with a brush or roller, allowing 6 to 8 hours between coats. After the last coat, allow 12 to 16 hours for solvent to evaporate from the system.

The coating must then be cured. Berger says the vessel should be filled with water and the water raised above 100°C (212°F) for a minimum of 5 hours. This bakes the coating into its final film.

Common Mistakes With Boiler Coatings

The most common mistake is coating over mill scale or rust that has not been removed. Berger’s preparation steps are specific, and skipping them leaves the coating with nothing firm to bond to.

Skipping the curing step is a second serious error. Berger says the coating is dry but not cured or water-resistant until the system is heated, so it must not be left in service until the curing is complete.

Working in an enclosed space without ventilation is a third risk. Solvent evaporates during drying, so provide ventilation and follow safe entry procedures for any vessel.

Care, Storage & Safety

This is a solvent-based industrial product. Keep containers away from heat and naked flames, and store them closed and upright, away from children. Wear suitable gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection while applying it. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Work only on cold, shut-down equipment, and follow the safety procedures for the vessel you are working on.

Choosing Between Berger Protective Coatings

Saify Paint House stocks Berger’s protective and industrial coatings. Apexior No.1 is for the internal surfaces of boilers and water-contact equipment. For the external surfaces of boilers, condensers, and chimneys, ask about Berger Apexior No.3. For metal and masonry in harsh exposure, ask about Berger Chlorinated Rubber Base Paint. For primers on general metal, ask about Berger Red Oxide Primer. Visit our Berger Paints range to compare them.

Planning Your Project

Measure the internal surface area of the equipment and use Berger’s coverage figure of 8 to 10 m² per litre at 38 microns DFT. Allow for three coats and for the blasting or cleaning work before coating. Berger sells this product in 5 litre packs. Our team can help you plan the quantity and the sequence of work.
