Gobi’s Gold Undercoat — Premium Alkyd Undercoat in Karachi

Gobi’s Gold Undercoat is an excellent quality alkyd-based intermediate coat from the Gold Series — Gobi’s premium product line. Available at Saify Paint House, your authorized Gobi’s Paints dealer in Karachi since 1999, it provides good adhesion with both primer and topcoat, building the even base that a quality enamel finish depends on.

Suitable for interior and exterior use on wood and primed metal, it is the intermediate stage in a full three-coat enamel system — the step that separates a good finish from an excellent one.

What an Undercoat Actually Does

Undercoat is the most frequently skipped stage in enamel work, and the one that most often explains why a finish looks merely acceptable rather than genuinely good.

Primer bonds to the substrate. Topcoat provides colour, gloss, and protection. Undercoat does something different from either: it builds film, provides opacity, and creates a uniform surface for the topcoat to sit on.

Opacity matters more than most people expect. Enamel topcoats are formulated for gloss and durability rather than hiding power, so applying them directly over primer often means two or three coats to bury the primer colour — particularly when going light over a red oxide primer, or changing colour on existing joinery. An undercoat in a close shade to the topcoat solves this in one step, and undercoat costs less than enamel.

Surface uniformity is the other function. Undercoat sands beautifully — far better than either primer or enamel — so it can be levelled to a genuinely smooth base before the finish coat goes on. On panelled doors and quality joinery, this sanding stage is what produces a surface that reads as sprayed rather than brushed.

Adhesion between coats completes it. Formulated to bond with both alkyd primers below and alkyd enamels above, the undercoat ties the system together into one integrated film rather than three separate layers.

Gobi’s Paints has manufactured coatings in Pakistan since 1981 under ISO 9001 certified quality standards. Full technical specifications for this product are available on the official Gobi’s Paints website.

Key Features

  • Excellent alkyd formulation — Premium quality intermediate coat
  • Good adhesion both ways — Bonds reliably with primer below and topcoat above
  • Builds opacity — Hides primer colour, reducing topcoat consumption
  • Sands to a smooth base — Levels beautifully before the finish coat
  • Improves finish quality — Uniform base means a better final surface
  • Interior and exterior use — Suitable for both applications

  • Wood and metal — Works across both substrate types

Recommended Applications

Gobi’s Gold Undercoat is used as the intermediate stage in enamel systems:

  • Doors, door frames, and architraves before enamel
  • Window frames and interior woodwork
  • Furniture and built-in joinery
  • Primed metal surfaces before topcoating
  • Colour changes on existing painted woodwork
  • Any surface where a high-quality enamel finish is required

Suitable for properly prepared wood and primed metal surfaces, interior and exterior.

Surface Preparation & Application

On wood: sand along the grain and remove all dust. Fill nail holes and defects with wood filler, allow to dry, and sand flush. Bare timber should be primed before undercoating; the undercoat builds on the primer rather than replacing it.

On metal: the surface must already be primed. Apply Gobi’s Gold Red Oxide Primer to bare or cleaned metal first, and allow it to dry fully before undercoating.

On previously painted surfaces: remove loose and flaking material, then sand existing gloss to provide a key.

Stir thoroughly before use. Apply by brush or spray, thinning with the appropriate solvent as directed on the pack. One coat is normally sufficient; a second helps when covering a strong existing colour or a red oxide primer beneath a pale topcoat.

Once fully dry, sand lightly with fine abrasive paper and remove all dust. This step is where the finish quality is actually decided — the topcoat will replicate whatever surface it is applied over, so time spent here shows directly in the result. Then apply the enamel topcoat.

Allow full drying between coats; alkyd products cure by oxidation and need longer than water-based materials. Clean equipment with the recommended solvent immediately after use.

The Complete Enamel System

A proper enamel finish on wood or metal is three stages, and each does a distinct job.

Prime first — Gold Red Oxide Primer on metal, an appropriate wood primer on bare timber. Undercoat second, sanded smooth. Then finish with Gobi’s Gold Enamel for a high-gloss surface, or Gobi’s Gold Matt Enamel for a contemporary matt finish.

Our team at either DHA store can specify the full system for your surfaces and estimate quantities across all three stages.
